Centers for Disease Control and Prevention HIV/AIDS is one of the most devastating diseases that humanity has ever faced. Since the first clinical evidence of HIV/AIDS was reported in 1981, more than 60 million people have been infected with the virus and more than 20 million have died of AIDS. This article provides an overview of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic with a focus on its impact on sub-Saharan Africa and people of African descent in the United States.
